"Working: A Musical" is a based on Studs Terkel's 1974 book, "Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do," which features interviews with people from various walks of life.
The musical aims to give a voice to the everyday working American, exploring their hopes, dreams, joys, and concerns. Eight actors portray a wide range of characters, including a waitress, millworker, schoolteacher, mason, trucker, fireman and many more.
The score includes songs by Columbia resident Craig Carnelia as well as Stephen Schwartz, James Taylor, Micki Grant, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and others.
The musical explores themes of work, identity, and the human condition, highlighting the importance of dignity and purpose of one's “chosen” profession.
